When it comes to having fun, our options are rather restricted as a result of our budget limit. So far, going to pub and having home parties are the only things we can afford and manage. They cost us comparably much less.

要找樂子的話，我們在這裡的選擇相對受限很多，因為預算的關係。目前為止，去酒吧和舉辦轟趴(home party...呵呵)是我們最常做的。我們錢花得相對比較少。

Let’s talk about pubs first. The word pub actually derives from the phrase “public house”, which means the place where anyone can get in with relaxation, have a cup of drink and do their socials. The oldest pub even can be traced back to the time of Rome, when people started to make ale in leisure. Today you can do almost whatever you what there: playing cards, throwing darts, shooting pool, watching football or rugby, and most important of all, drinking like a fish.

先聊聊酒吧好了。事實上，酒吧是從公眾場所這個英文字而來的。公眾場所的意思是任何人都可以進來放輕鬆，喝一杯，做些社交活動。最古老的酒吧甚至可以追溯到羅馬時代，當時人們開始在農閒時釀麥芽啤酒。今天，你可以在酒吧裡面做幾乎任何你想做的事情：打牌、丟飛鏢、打撞球、看足球或橄欖球，當然最重要的是，痛快暢飲。

Most people coming into pub will certainly order beer in pint glasses. Of course, if you are a lady and you don’t want to get drunk, you can buy a bottle of Coke or juice. You get a variety of choices about beer, including draught bitter, draught lager, stout as Guiness, mild and lots of other brands. I prefer Forster because it tastes less bitter and has rich froth.

大部分進來酒吧的人當然會點啤酒(不然叫牛奶唷?)。當然，如果你是女生又不想喝醉的話，可以叫杯可樂或果汁。啤酒種類超多；桶裝苦啤酒，桶裝窖藏啤酒，黑啤酒像健力士(愛爾蘭的傳統啤酒)，口味溫和的啤酒，品牌很多。我個人比較喜歡一種叫做Forster的啤酒，喝起來不苦，酒泡很多。

Almost all pubs in England are historically-preserved outside and marvelously-decorated inside. Sometimes you will find yourself drinking together with piles of history relics, and the chair you were sitting on is actually a delicate Victorian antique. With time passing by, more and more pubs start to provide hot meals and even beds for spending the night, thus transforming themselves into hostels, folk accommodation and B&B. The pub culture is so popular that it starts to prevail overseas besides England in the name of bars or lounge bar. Recent regulation might make non-smokers like pubs even much better: from this July on, smoking is completely prohibited indoors in the U.K., including all pubs.

幾乎所有英格蘭的酒吧都有歷史維護的建築外觀，以及華麗裝飾的內部裝潢。有時候，你甚至可以發現你正坐在成堆的歷史遺跡旁邊啜飲，甚至發現你就坐在一個精緻的維多利亞時代骨董上面。而隨著時間流逝，越來越多酒吧開始經營提供熱食，甚至提供過夜的床，進而轉變成為旅店或民宿。酒吧文化如此受歡迎，以至於開始在世界各地以不同名稱盛行。而最近的法令使得不抽菸的人更喜歡酒吧：從今年七月起，人們不得在英國境內室內抽菸，包括所有酒吧。

We have been local pubs for a couple of times, and most of them are for meeting or neighbor socials. The most impressive one, however, is the time we went to the Mitre for watching World Cup Rugby, England against the home team France. One of our neighbors comes from France and he was extremely thrilled because France team took the lead after the game started. He even had to whisper to me because the pub was packed with England fans. “We goanna win so long as we hold on for another quarter,” he said. To his surprise, the table turned in the last ten minutes and England won with roaring cheers. The frustration on his face is something you will remember for life.

我們之前有去這裡的酒吧幾次，大部分是和別人見面或和鄰居交誼。然而，最令人印象深刻的一次卻是我們到Mitre看世界杯橄欖球賽，地主法國隊對上英格蘭隊。我們其中一個鄰居是法國人，非常興奮，因為從開賽後法國一直保持領先。因為滿屋子都是英格蘭球迷，他甚至必須耳語對我說，”我們再撐十五分鐘就會贏了”。令他驚訝的是，情勢在最後十分鐘逆轉，而英格蘭贏得比賽。他臉上的沮喪你會一輩子記得。
